Oilhead boxers

Beginning with the BMW R 1100 RS sports tourer in 1993, BMW began to transition from engines with air-cooled cylinder heads ("airhead" engines) to oil-cooled cylinder heads ("oilhead" engines). The BMW R 100 RS also used "Telelever" front suspension (where braking forces are transferred horizontally to minimize "fork dive") and a stressed engine. The "airhead" BMW R 80 GS and R 100 GS models remained in production until 1997, before being replaced by the newer "oilhead" models such as the BMW R 850 series, the 1994–1999 BMW R 1100 R standard motorcycle, the 1994–1999 BMW R 1100 GS dual-sport, the 1996–2001 BMW R 1100 RT tourer, the 1998–2005 BMW R 1100 S sports, and the 1999–2004 BMW R1150 GS dual-sport. The BMW R 1200 C, produced from 1997 to 2004, was BMW Motorcycle's only entry into the cruiser market.

These are made from 6068 anodized Aluminum. Do not even think about getting these bobbins made out of steel or anything else that hard! They are made from this aluminum so that the brake rotor does not wear, and neither does the part that they mount on. Just like OEM.

Check the brake rotors on your bike, in case it is one of the models above. Side to side play is normal, but if the discs turn clockwise or anti-clockwise, that is not OK.

All you need to have them as new are these bobbins. The spacers can be reused, as they are not an item that wears.

Fitting them requires you to:

– take off the front wheel;

– take the rotors off(retaining bolts might have Loctite on them so heating might be needed; check with the manual);

– replace the bobbins;

– put back the rotors on the wheel; tightening torque is required (21Nm, but check with the manual to be sure).

You can send your old HES plate in for fixing!

The fix includes new sensors and new wiring harness. By repairing your old plate you basically have a brand new plate at a fraction of the cost of a new one! The only thing left unchanged is the actual metal plate and the plastic connector.

Common issue with oilheads – 850/1100/1150, the engine oil filler cap starts leaking. Just changing the top o-ring does not help, you have to also change the one between the cap recess and the aluminum valve cover.

Every now and then, it is a good idea to open up the starter motor and clean it and lube it. Clutch friction plate dust gets in there, making it not retract as it should, and, in time, result in flywheel wear! We don’t need that.

When you open up the starter motor for inspection, you might accidentally snap the brush spring over the brittle plastic holder, resulting in the brushes not sitting in as they should. Get the plastic holder in time and have it at hand, in case you need it!

Selling here are the two seals, and not the piston. The piston is not an item that wears, the seals are. If the brake fluid was not changed as it should be, every 2 years or every 20.000 kms, it starts to crystallize and the seals rub against the crystals, so that the brake system starts to leak. Not only is this dangerous (the front brake takes care of 70% of the motorcycle mass) but if dripping, it can ruin the nice paint on your fairing/tank.

The mounts are made of 3 mm thick stainless steel and polished to a near-mirror finish. They come with all the needed hardware: Allen screws, nylon locking nuts and washers, all in stainless steel. The lower part that gets locked on the valve cover is fixed, but the upper side is height adjustable. They can take two sets of lights, so you can mount a fog set on the lower side and a hi beam set on the upper side of the mounts. The bending on the upper mount part is for extra strength and so that the whole assembly does not vibrate.

Because almost all of the BMW R 850/1100/1150 bikes will suffer because of a HES (Hall effect sensors) plate failure, I came up with this design that will never fail again, meaning that you will never get stranded because of this. You can pressure wash the bike all you want or ride in the rain, after fitting this part. For GS riders, river crossing will never be a problem, unless you allow water getting inside the engine 😀

The price for an unit is 220$ , shipping is included, worldwide, and the warranty for this part is the lifetime of the bike. It replaces the 12112306137 and 12117673277 OEM code parts from BMW. For all 850, 1100 and 1150 bikes, it’s a direct swap.
